Laurus nobilis, commonly known as Bay Laurel, is an evergreen aromatic shrub or small tree valued for its glossy foliage, elegant form, and culinary uses. Native to the Mediterranean region, it has dark green, leathery, lance-shaped leaves that release a distinctive fragrance when crushed.
Growing naturally into a dense, upright form, Bay Laurel can reach several metres in height but responds well to pruning, making it suitable for hedging, screening, containers, and formal gardens. In spring, small, pale yellow flowers appear, followed by dark purple to black berries on female plants when a suitable pollinating plant is nearby.
Hardy and adaptable, Laurus nobilis prefers a sunny to partly shaded position and well-drained soil. Its fragrant leaves are traditionally used fresh or dried to flavour soups, stews, sauces, and other dishes. With its attractive evergreen foliage and versatility, Bay Laurel makes an excellent choice for both ornamental and edible gardens.
